There is not much as terrifying as being approached by a wild animal in Minnesota and realizing that you do not have a place where you can go to get away. Wild animals or domestic animals can be incredibly dangerous if they are provoked or think you are going to hurt them. Being informed about how you should react and what behaviors to avoid is imperative to your ability to stay safe and reduce the chances of being attacked.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is to always treat animals with respect. Give them their space and do not be cruel or tease them. Teach your children to be kind and gentle with animals too. For example, if you or a family member has a dog, teach your children not to pull on their tail, put their hands by the dog’s face or tease them.

Survival Life suggests other important things to remember including the following:

  • Be aware of how an animal is reacting to your presence. If it seems agitated or stressed, immediately move away.
  • When you notice an animal, you have never seen before, even if it looks friendly, do not approach it.
  • If you are spending time in the outdoors, be aware of what types of animals live in that area and learn how to protect yourself against them.
  • If you are being approached by an animal, refrain from running or screaming.
